Swinging for a Cure golf tournament Aug. 8

Modern Business Machines (MBM), an Appleton-based document technology management company, will sponsor the 11th Annual Swinging for a Cure golf tournament at Royal St. Patrick’s Golf Links in Wrightstown Friday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m.

MBM has been the title sponsor since the tournament’s inception in 1998. Michael Schuldes, Sales Manager for MBM, is the driving force behind Swinging for a Cure. Schuldes found personal value in supporting Leukemia research after his daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was 7 weeks old.

When Michael founded Swinging for a Cure, Fritz Merizon asked how he could help, and now has been a sponsor and a golfer every year. Employees and community members also participate in honor of Schuldes’s daughter and the families in the area that are affected by the disease. Together they have raised more than $100,000 in the past 10 years for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“I believe very strongly in supporting causes that are important to our employees,” said Merizon, President and General Manager. “This tournament has proved to be an event that our employees look forward to participating in each year.”

The annual golf outing benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Michael Schuldes sees every year as a way to give back to an organization that is dedicated to helping families affected by blood cancers and finding a cure for the diseases.

“I am honored and impressed by the amount of support I’ve received from MBM executives and employees for the past 10 years,” he said. “This year we have golfers aged 13–70 signed up to play and hope to have 144 golfers signed up to participate the day of the event. It’s a great way for everyone to come together for such an important cause through golfing — an activity close to the hearts of many businesses and executives in the area.”

The scramble tournament in teams of four is open to any businesses or community members interested in participating. The cost is $125 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, box lunch, drink tickets, prizes, live entertainment and a buffet dinner. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the tournament to follow at 10 a.m.

Prizes and silent auction items include two club seats for a regular season Packer game, Fox Cities Performing Arts tickets, and Wisconsin Badger basketball and football game tickets. All proceeds will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
