The first new coal-fired power plant built in the state in more than 20 years is generating electricity to the wholesale energy market, a Green Bay utility said today.
The Weston 4 power plant near Wausau cost $774 million. Construction began in October 2004.
The plant started generating power earlier this year but has been going through a series of tests before being declared commercial.
The new power plant can generate 525 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power more than 200,000 homes.
Wisconsin Public Service operates Weston 4 and owns 70 percent of the power plant with the Dairyland Power Cooperative of western Wisconsin owning the other 30 percent. The total project cost was split between the two entities by ownership percentage.
WPS is a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Group Inc. (TEG), Chicago. To read more about the plant, click here.
