ESPN: Favre seeking release from Packers

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported Friday that quarterback Brett Favre has sent a letter to the Green Bay Packers asking for his contractual release.

According to the report, Favre's agent Bus Cook sent the letter via overnight mail Thursday and it arrived at Packers headquarters Friday morning. Cook said that Favre wanted an amicable parting.

Mortensen said Favre participated in a conference call with Packers general manager Ted Thompson, coach Mike McCarthy and Cook on Tuesday. During the call, the legendary quarterback emphatically stated that he wanted to play in 2008.

However, Mortensen reported, Thompson and McCarthy were not receptive or enthused about Favre returning to the team. This led to Favre asking Cook to seek his release from the Packers.

According to Mortensen, Cook's letter to the Packers suggested that the quarterback's accomplishments merited the team granted his release with no strings attached. Mortensen said that Favre does not want to be traded because he wants to choose where he will play.

The report added that Favre did not want to discuss his situation when approached while working out at a Hattisburg, Miss., high school.

On Friday afternoon, the Packers released this statement:

“The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre.

“Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion.

“Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement.

“The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.

“As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team.

“As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions. Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family.”
