A coalition of conservation groups is opposing pending federal ballast water legislation to protect the Great Lakes and other bodies of waters from invasive species.
In a letter sent today to Wisconsin Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, the group of 14 environmental organizations say the proposed law does not go nearly far enough to solve the problem of contaminated water discharged by overseas freighters. The coalition includes the Sierra Club and Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers.
But many other Great Lakes conservation groups are supporting the bill, arguing it is likely the best deal the lakes can get.
