Steve & Barry’s seeks bankruptcy protection

Steve & Barry’s, the Port Washington, N.Y.-based clothing retailer, announced Wednesday afternoon the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing the volatility of the credit markets and the general economic slide as major factors affecting the company’s performance. Its stores remain open, the company said, and are conducting business as usual. It has 275 stores in 40 states, including a store at Southridge Mall in Greendale, that offer all items for less than $20. Other Wisconsin locations are in Madison, Appleton, Wausau, Green Bay, Rice Lake and Marshfield.
