The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Northeast Region office at Green Bay is announcing the College Avenue bridge in Appleton will close for 16 months, beginning Monday, Aug. 11.
A new bridge is being built on the existing site and will reopen in November 2009. The project also includes construction of a roundabout at College Avenue, Walter Avenue and John Street.
Beginning Aug. 11, the City of Appleton will be doing utility work on the approaches adjacent to the bridge. Demolition of the existing bridge will begin approximately one week later.
College Avenue will also close between the east bridge approach and Matthias Street from Aug. 11 to Oct. 1. Next year, College Avenue will be closed from Drew Street to the west bridge approach and from the east bridge approach and Matthias Street beginning April 15.
Motorists are advised the bridge will be closing early Monday, Aug. 11 and they should begin using alternate routes that day. The official detour will be Wisconsin 47 (Richmond Street), Outagamie County OO (Northland Avenue) and Wisconsin 441. Other crossings of the Fox River are at Lawe Street, Olde Oneida Street, Oneida Street and Memorial Drive.
