Flood update: Winnebago County named disaster area

Winnebago County is one of 12 counties in Wisconsin that have been declared disaster areas after Thursday’s torrential rains and flooding.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency toured Fond du Lac County Tuesday and Sheboygan County Wednesday assessing flood damage. Agency officials are scheduled to tour Green Lake County Friday.

A flood warning is in effect for the Fox River near Berlin. The Fox, which was at 15.54 feet at 2:15 p.m., is expected to crest near 15.6 feet tonight. About half of Riverside Park in Berlin is under water, as are roads near the river. Lowland flooding is occurring downriver in the Eureka and Omro areas, according to the National Weather Service.

No-wake orders are now in effect on the Fox River and Lake Butte des Morts in Winnebago County and on the Fox River in Outagamie County until further notice. No-wake orders have been in effect in Green Lake and Waushara counties since last weekend.

Damage estimates in Ripon are nearing $2 million, including $500,000 to the city’s waterwater treatment plant, according to a City of Ripon news release. Ripon’s Gothic Mill Pond dam, which was overtopped by flood waters Friday, did not suffer significant damage.
